Instagram photo download not working? How to fix it
Need the full step-by-step for requesting your Instagram export? See the complete guide →
1. The download is stuck or still preparing
Instagram doesn't download instantly. After you request it, Instagram builds the file in the background and emails you when it's ready. There's no progress bar, so it often feels stuck even when it's working normally.
- Give it up to 48 hours. Small accounts can be ready in a few hours; large ones with years of posts and videos can take a day or two.
- Check the email on your account. The "Your information is ready to download" email goes to the address linked to your Instagram, which may not be the one you usually check.
- Look in spam and promotions. Search your inbox for Instagram or ready to download in case it was filtered.
- If nothing arrives after two days, request it again. Go to Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information and start a fresh request.
2. You never got the email
The most common reason a download "doesn't work" is simply that the ready email landed somewhere unexpected. Confirm the email address under Accounts Center, check spam and promotions folders, and search for "Instagram." If the address on file is wrong or one you no longer use, update it, then request the download again so the new link goes to the right inbox.
3. The link expired before you used it
Instagram's download links expire after a few days for security. If yours expired, you don't lose anything — just request a new one:
- Open Accounts Center. On a computer or in the app, go to Settings → Accounts Center.
- Go to "Your information and permissions." Then choose Download your information.
- Request again and download promptly. When the new email arrives, grab the file right away before this link expires too.
4. The file won't open, or photos are missing
Once the file arrives, a few things can go wrong when you open it. Here's how to sort them out:
- If it won't open, re-download the whole thing. A dropped connection can leave a partial file that fails to open. Let the download finish completely before opening.
- Use a real extract tool for big files. A multi-gigabyte archive can choke a basic unzipper. On Windows, 7-Zip is reliable; on Mac, The Unarchiver works well. Make sure you have free disk space.
- If photos look missing, check your settings. Set media quality to High and date range to All time when you request it. Lower quality and narrow date ranges leave things out.
- Download every part of a split export. Large archives are split into several files — you need all of them to see everything.
5. Trying it on your phone vs. a computer
Phones struggle with large archives. On iPhone you can save the file to the Files app and tap to extract; on Android, use the Files app or a free unzip app. But for anything more than a small account, opening the export on a computer is far more reliable — and it's much easier to actually look through everything afterward.
Your export, turned into one gallery — organized by year and by the people in it.
The easiest way to actually see your photos
Even once the file finally opens, an Instagram export is awkward: photos sit in nested folders, dates are often scrambled, and videos and Reels are tucked away from the photos. After all that effort, you still can't just look at your memories.
That's what everkept fixes. Upload the file and you get one private gallery — every photo and video together, organized by year and grouped by the people in them, with the dates restored. No unzipping, no folder-digging. Free to preview; one-time price to keep it, no subscription.
Common questions
Why is my Instagram download stuck or taking so long?
Instagram prepares your download in the background, which can take a few hours to a couple of days for large accounts — and there's no progress bar, so it feels stuck even when it's working. Give it up to 48 hours, confirm the email on your account, and check spam. If nothing arrives after two days, request it again.
Why didn't I get my Instagram download email?
The email goes to the address linked to your account, which may not be the one you check. Confirm it under Accounts Center, check spam and promotions, and search your inbox for "Instagram." If it's still missing after 48 hours, request a new download.
Why has my Instagram download link expired?
Links expire after a few days for security. Just request the download again from Accounts Center → Your information and permissions → Download your information, and grab the new file promptly.
Why won't my Instagram file open, or why are photos missing?
Usually an incomplete download, a file too large for the built-in unzipper, or photos exported in lower quality. Re-download fully, use a dedicated app like 7-Zip for large files, set quality to High and the right date range, and download every part of a split export. A computer is far more reliable than a phone.
